i like using windows because i am able to compress my file using winzip.
but now i am staring linux and i want to know how do i compress a file in linux command shell?

you can use this command to tar a file or directory

example: to make a tar file from a file called wallpaperama.php i can do this:

tar -pczf wallpaperama.tar.gz wallpaperama.php

ok, how about if you want to create a tar file from a directory? lets say i have a directory called wallpapers in /home/web/wallpapaerama/ you can use this command:

tar -pczf wallpaperama.tar.gz /home/web/wallpapaerama/
